Photoshop Quick Tip #5: How to lock the transparency of a layer.

7409 reads Printer Friendly Page
Locking the transparency of a layer will prevent changes being made to the level of opacity and restrict editing to just the content of opaque and semi-opaque areas.

Open the Layers palette from the Window menu. Select the layer whose transparent pixels you wish to lock and then click the Transparency button beside the word "Lock". This can also be toggled on and off by hitting the "/" key while a layer is selected.
