Make way for the VoIP

Nobody hates monopolies like Mac users. So why plunk down money for overpriced phone service? This week were taking a look at software that will let you Mac take your phone's place

X-Lite/ X-PRO for Vonage users

For those of you that are already enjoying VoIP through a SIP compliant provider like Vonage or AT&T, you can make calls directly from your Mac using X-Lite.

For Vonage providers, there's a pro version already set up for the service. Vonage charges you an extra $10 a month to make calls via softphone.

Skype

If you prefer free to cheaper, Skype is worth a try. Talking to other Skypers is free, dialing out to phones is cheap.

Skype has a nice UI and has a growing user base. Skype requires Panther or better.

ohphone

Now if you're more of a free with principles type, you'll be happy to know there's an Open Source VoIP that is free as in beer and freedom.

ohphone supports more than a half-dozen codecs and works with several free applications. Video conferencing is also included. This app will require a little more tweaking, but that's fun, right?

We're still at the dawn of VoIP, so expect to see more applications here soon. Until then, these three are enough to give you something to talk about.
